Capdau Jaguars Win Middle School Football Championship

Congratulations to Pierre A. Capdau Charter School on becoming the 2019 Middle School Tackle Champions!

Capdau’s Jaguars defeated SciTech Academy 6-0 in the championship game Nov. 20.

The Jaguars finished the regular season 8-1 to finish as the No. 2 seed. The team’s only loss came from the No. 1-seeded SciTech. It was the first winning season for the relatively new program.

“This is truly a testament to those kids who didn’t have a whole lot of success initially, but beyond that it really gets them involved in school and in academics. We’re really setting them up for success in high school,” Principal Dr. Edward Brown said.

Brown started the football program at the now closed Gentilly Terrace Elementary School in 2013, with no equipment or money dedicated to athletics. In Capdau’s first two seasons, the team didn’t win a single game. Last year, it won two before going nearly undefeated and winning the championship this year.

“It’s not just about having a football program,” Brown said. “It’s getting kids excited, increasing student participation at school and having school pride. It’s about academics because they have to keep their grades up to be on the team and about the positive behavior they have to have to remain on the team.”

Brown should know. The same week his team won the championship he successfully defended his doctoral thesis to earn his PhD. The topic? How students who successfully participate in athletics also succeed in school.
